And whilst on the subject of feature films, we also introduce anmarticle this month on the 3D animated film, Igor. Find out more on page 027 about how Autodesk Maya was used in the bringing of Igor to life. Our tutorials this month see the end of another 3DCreative era, as we welcome the final instalment and wave farewell to the mega tutorial series for 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, LightWave, Maya and Softimage XSI: Creating a Complete Scene from Concept to Render (page 083). I’m sure you’ll agree that our artists have done some fantastic work on this series over the past few issues, and for those of you who simply want more, more, more, then stay tuned for the February 2009issue of 3DCreative where we will bring to you the first instalment of a 6-chapter series on creating a gothic church interior scene for 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, LightWave, Maya and – new to 3DCreative’s tutorials – modo! Yes, that’s right: modo will be amongst the tutorial line up in the Februaryissue , so we hope you’ll all give a huge welcome to our new modo tutorial artist next month. Also to be expected in the next big series is a chapter on ZBrush, and the final chapter will be an indepth look into post-production in Photoshop. There’s lots more to come from us this year – so stick around!
Our ZBrush tutorials this month include the speed sculpting of a space ninja by Jesse Sandifer and Dalton Alves Muniz, and Rafael Ghencev talks us through
the creation of a character that he’s badly beaten up – for purely artistic purposes of course (please note that no people were hurt during the making
of this issue of 3DCreative). Check out page 055 for Rafael’s sculpted and textured character created entirely in ZBrush, and page 045 for this month’s
speed sculpting challenge.
To round things up, we have two making of articles for you this month, the first of which has been created by Nicolas Collings on the creation of his Orc
Maori character image (page 063), and the second is a wonderful living room interior created by Felipe Lobo (page 069). Monetary Economics

This book challenges the mainstream paradigm, which is based on the inter-temporal optimisation of welfare by individual agents. It introduces a new methodology for studying how it is institutions (firms, banks, governments, foreigners and households) which create flows of income, expenditure and production together with stocks of assets (including money) and liabilities, thereby determining how whole economies evolve through time. It is a central contention that any realistic representation of a monetary economy must be grounded in a fully articulated system of national income and flow of funds accounts which is so complete that the nth variable is logically implied by the other n-1. As the financial balances of each sector have exact counterparts in changes in stock variables, historical time is introduced into the basic system of concepts, with asset and liability stocks providing the link between each period and each succeeding period.
It is taken as axiomatic that decisions are based on expectations about the future reached under conditions of uncertainty, so for every sector there must exist at least one flexible option or "buffer" over which that sector has no direct control and which adjusts passively when expectations are falsified. For firms the buffer will normally take the form of inventories, for banks and governments it will be stocks of government securities, for households it will be stocks of credit money. Accordingly, outside financial markets there is neither need nor place for equilibrium conditions to bring supply into equivalence with demand. It will almost always be quantities rather than prices which give the signals which keep the economy on track.
Starting with extremely simple stock flow consistent (SFC) models, the text describes a succession of increasingly complex models, using a conventional narrative style backed up by equations which bring precision to individual propositions. However, underlying each narrative there exists a simulation model constructed with such rigour that, in harmony with its basis in comprehensive accounting, there is always one equation which is implied logically by all the others. Solutions of these models are used to illustrate, with charts, ways in which whole economies evolve when shocked in various ways. Readers will be able to download all the models and explore their properties for themselves.
A major conclusion is that economies require management via fiscal and monetary policy if full employment without inflation is to be achieved.

From 1998 through 2000, the China Reform Forum (CRF) in Beijing and RAND in Santa Monica have jointly organized an annual conference of experts from China and the United States, focusing on economic and security subjects of mutual concern. Venues of the three conferences alternated between Beijing and Santa Monica, and conference participants included practitioners as well as scholars from both countries.

This book contains the papers delivered at the 1999 conference in Santa Monica, California, whose theme, “China, the United States, and the Global Economy,” provides the book’s title. The conference agenda and list of participants appear at the end of this volume.

The broad theme was deliberately chosen to provide ample scope to address both economic and security interests and concerns of the United States and China. While the theme was overly ambitious, it allowed participants to address both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the subject: quantitative data relating to trade and investment, both bilaterally between China and the United States, and multilaterally between them and the rest of the world; and qualitative considerations such as those relating to China’s (and Taiwan’s) membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as the convergent and divergent security interests of China and the United States.
